Mary Harlan
Mary Harlan founded Harlan Consulting Services, Inc. in 1993 with the mission to engage people in deliberate change that supports business success. Harlan Consulting’s signature work with Action Learning Teams leverages executive vision and employee engagement to generate customized solutions and capture critical opportunities. These teams have worked with clients such as the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institute of Health, BP Amoco, and the United States Department of Agriculture.
Ms. Harlan created the Systems Approach to Diversity® as a framework to align organizational culture with business objectives. This approach involves leadership development, current state analyses, teambuilding, mentoring and coaching, and a training curriculum that includes generational differences, cross-cultural communication and conflict resolution, supervisory skills, and performance appraisal. Harlan Consulting’s Action Learning Teams are a critical element of this approach which achieve results on multiple levels: organizational profitability, departmental and team effectiveness, and individual satisfaction. Harlan’s comprehensive approach to culture change has been used to support organizations in their ability to leverage diversity, to support inter-cultural joint ventures, and to ensure success with operations in multiple international locations. Ms. Harlan is a certified Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) administrator.
Ms. Harlan is an active member of her community, having served Big Brothers/Big Sisters, CORE, and the Jane Goodall Institute. She has authored articles focused on her Action Learning Team approach, and she is a frequent speaker at conferences including Linkage, Gulf Coast Symposium, Texas Diversity Conference. Ms. Harlan serves on the Planning Committee for the Chief Diversity Officer Forum.
